  2 days ago · A reader wanted a version of O Magnum Mysterium, by Tomas Luis Victoria, first published in , at the height of the Catholic restoration, a beautiful motet, normally sung at Christmas (it was originally the Midnight Mass antiphon) but works for any time of year.

  Although composed in , O Magnum Mysterium took a good few years before garnering such widespread praise. and while it is performed all year round, the piece is, at its heart, all about Christmas. The text tells the story of the birth of Jesus, and Lauridsen’s music is as sensitive and spiritual as you could possibly wish for.

  Jan 14,  · o magnum mysterium. January 14, by the life I picked. Not quite three weeks past Christmas, we are moving into the heart of winter. The Julian calendar celebrates old Twelfth Night January 17th, and this is the traditional date for Wassailing in parts of England; maybe somehow this is where my lingering sense of Christmas originates.

  The justly famous motet O magnum mysterium (O great mystery) sets a sublime text from Christmas Vespers. Victoria’s use of serenely interwoven polyphony at the opening bars leads to a hushed chordal declamation at the words “O beata Virgo” (“O Blessed Virgin”).
