  This pleasant album features all of the typical elements of a good Xavier Rudd release. It features Rudd's killer slide guitar, a good overall sound, the infusion of aboriginal sounds and his environmental consciousness. In this respect, "Dark Shades of Blue" seems a bit redundant. It is more of the same without taking things to the next level/5(25).

  Dark Shades of Blue is special, and unique to Rudd's catalog. First off, it's an electric record, full of barely contained squalling guitars, percussion, and a more textural approach to recording. That said, it's hardly a sellout; in fact, given how comfortably he inhabits this terrain, this may be the record Rudd has desired to make for a long Price: $

  Dark Shades of Blue is a brave move; Rudd has followed his heart's aesthetic path at the risk of alienating an audience he built from the ground up, who may not accept change so gracefully (let's hope they do because this set smokes).8/

  This album is a fantastic step forward in Xavier Rudd's music, from the chilled-out folk of Food In The Belly and To Let to a different, darker, side. The didgeridoo and thoughtful lyrics are still there in abundance, but are given a new edge by a rockier, more electric sound on some tracks/5(6).
